Have you ever been stressed or anxious and then you step away for a few minutes and you clear your head, slow your mind down a bit? …that’s what I call “Resetting”. Just like a computer. When your computer is overloaded and locks up, you reset and it works great again.

I have found some things that work and my therapist and I are going to try a technique that I have been using to reset, in order to bring up repressed memories that may be contributing to my depression. Does that not sound cool?? Sorry, the human mind intrigues me.

When I am at work and getting a bit stressed, on my breaks I take my phone and I have a puzzle game that I love and it helps clear my mind. I also love to do Sudoku puzzles, crossword puzzles. So if you can find something that you like to do, it can help clear out the things that cause stress (usually things you don’t like).

When I am at home, there are several things I like to do. I learned to crochet when I was a kid. It is an activity I really don’t have to concentrate on while I do it, so it’s kind of meditative. I also have found Diamond Paintings. It is an activity that does not require artistic ability, you are just placing pieces in symboled spots to make a picture. Puzzles are also good for me.

My therapist also told me that taking a few minutes to meditate either in the morning or just before retiring for the day. I found an app for my phone called Calm. It plays soothing music for a designated period of time. You just need to sit or lay there, close your eyes, and do some deep, relaxing breathing. I’m sure there are other apps, but this is the one I use.

Doing a really good workout is also good for clearing your mind. It has a couple added benefits too, like producing Endorphins, which elevate your mood; and it helps your health and fitness.

Now…here is the technique that I have been using to calm my mind and that my therapist want to start using to bring up repressed memories. It is called EFT tapping (Emotional Freedom Techniques). EFT contends that the cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system. It is based on Eastern medicine. It has been studied by modern medicine for about 20 years and the science is there to back it up. It incorporates tapping a series of acupuncture points in order to release blockages in the flow of the body’s energy.
